How to Get Closer to God TODAY

We all struggle to get closer to God in our daily lives, to build that close relationship, and there are seasons when it's especially hard. We're now knee-deep in "the holiday season," and for some of us that means we're drowning in stress. But it's not too late to get back on our feet, shake off the feeling of impending doom, and actually enjoy Christmastime. It only comes once a year after all. Here are five things you can do TODAY to get closer to God and revive your faith.

1. Read the Promises of God

The fastest way to get out of a mood is to read God's truth. Scripture is filled with verses like "do not fear" and "do not be dismayed." The Lord does not want you to be stressed; He wants you to rest in His strength.Take a time-out to open your Bible (or your Bible app) and read the Psalms. They are my favorite way to get my head on straight. Especially check out Psalm 19, Psalm 96, and Psalm 126. Get your joy on!

2. Talk to Someone on a Higher Spiritual Level

If you want to get closer to God, talk to someone who is on a higher spiritual level, someone who is where you want and need to be. This might be your father of confession, it might be a friend who is on firmer ground these days, and it might be a parent or grandparent. Call this person up for a quick chat. You'll be surprised how their Godliness is infectious! There's a reason we worship in community. When one of us is tired, another can buoy her back up.

3. Return to Your Childhood

To enter the kingdom of God, scripture says we need a child-like faith. The fastest way I know of to restore a childlike faith is to spend time with children. Whether you are racing around the house after your own kiddos or helping a friend out with hers, it's hard to feel grumpy with giggling children. The trick is to be present. Put aside everything else and be 100% in the moment with them.Oh--and ask the spiritual advice of these children and take their responses to heart. They know things we have long forgotten or buried under supposed adult wisdom.

4. Review Stories of Success

Sometimes, with our goldfish memories, we just need a little extra effort to recall times in the past that God has helped us and supported us. We want to know how to get closer to God, but we forget we've been closer to Him in the past. We've asked and received many times, and yet we forget them all--especially under stress. Sit down and review the times where God has been there for you. Thank Him again; renew that feeling of gratitude.

5. Take a Mini-Retreat

We've all got busy lives, and around this time of year they just get busier. Soon our homes will fill with family and laughter. If you're an introvert like me, this can be a little draining. Be purposeful in spending your time. Carve out mini-retreats where you can escape into quiet moments with God. Talk to Him. Meditate on His faithfulness. And remember why the holidays matter: these are happy memories for harvesting just before the winter frost. Those are five small, easy things that will get you closer to God and revive your faith! You can probably do these five things in one day. Rinse and repeat as many times as needed in the next three weeks to make this the best Nativity it can be!
