Rise Before the Gray Headed

"You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the Lord." Leviticus 19:32

When I was growing up, my parents always told me the story of the Wooden Bowl. I thought of it this morning as I overheard my daughter chatting with her great-grandpa. She was telling him that we were all going to the park and asking if he wanted to go with us. She's little and still doesn't enunciate fully, and he's aging and doesn't hear as well. I heard him ask her "What?" four or five times. Each time, she patiently repeated herself, a little louder, a little clearer. She even paraphrased and broke up the statement to make sure they understood each other. It was so important to her that he come with us on our walk.

I thought about writing an entry about this story, and then I found that a blogger I follow posted it TODAY on his/her blog! So here it is, from Maran Atha: The Wooden Bowl.

I also suggest you take a look at the Snopes page on the story. It really shows how the tale spans the boundaries of time and culture.
